Building Community Through Greening

PHS views greening as an integral way to bring urban neighbors together and create a higher quality of life throughout the city. Its Philadelphia Green program organizes residents and local groups to maintain parks, plant and maintain tree-lined streets, and transform vacant lots into community gardens and open spaces. It also offers:

  • Training in group development, project planning, and fundraising
  • Horticultural education
  • Landscape architecture services
  • Ongoing technical support

In partnership with community-based development organizations, Philadelphia Green also links greening to street improvements, new housing, commercial developments, and other community development projects. In addition, Philadelphia Green manages neighborhood-based projects that emphasize the value of open space to the quality of life in urban communities.
