Philadelphia Green's ‘City Harvest’ program
City Harvest is a unique partnership between PHS; the Philadelphia Prison System; SHARE, a food distribution network; and the Health Promotion Council of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
The community-based City Harvest network raises naturally grown vegetables and distributes them to Philadelphians who lack access or the means to purchase fresh produce.
Inmates of the Philadelphia Prison System (with guidance from PHS staff) grow seeds into seedlings at a recently refurbished greenhouse at the prison in Northeast Philadelphia. These seedlings are transplanted into the prison’s Roots-to-Reentry garden or brought to one of 42 participating community gardens. Prison inmates and volunteer gardeners grow the vegetables from the transplants, and through SHARE, the resulting produce is distributed to food cupboards throughout the city. In addition, City Harvest provides nutrition education with the Health Promotion Council through cooking demonstrations and tastings that encourage consumption of fresh, healthy produce.
