How to be a City Harvest Volunteer in 3 Easy Steps

Volunteers are an important part of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society family. PHS has wonderful gardening opportunities from early spring through late fall for volunteers who would like to help out. Your assistance in the City Harvest project will help provide much-needed fresh produce for Philadelphians who may not otherwise have access to it.

There is no training to become a City Harvest volunteer but the desire to help serve communities with fresh produce
and have fun while doing it.  You do not need to have prior gardening experience, although you should be willing to get dirty!  Regular garden work includes, but is not limited to: weeding, pruning, using power and hand tools, planting seeds and starts, harvesting, clearing areas of brush and invasive species, trash pickup, building small structures or raised beds, sweeping, and digging.  As work varies throughout the seasons, volunteers must be interested in manual labor and flexible in their responsibilities while volunteering.  We will work with volunteers to accommodate their interests and skills.  Volunteers for City Harvest must be older than 12.  Most gardens are not wheelchair accessible.

We accept groups and individuals to volunteer on a one time or recurring basis.  Volunteers who are interested in a long term commitment often can serve their communities the most effectively.
