Vacant Land Management Manual & Video

Reclaiming Vacant Lots: A Philadelphia Green Guide

PHS’s Philadelphia Green program has compiled a how-to manual to help city agencies, community-based organizations and block groups reclaim vacant lots in the city. Reclaiming Vacant Lots: A Philadelphia Green Guide outlines a basic “clean & green” approach to managing vacant land, which involves clearing debris, planting grass and trees and installing fences. The manual also provides information on settling ownership issues, developing a site plan, and creating a long-term maintenance strategy.

New Kensington Vacant Land Management Program Video

In 1995, Philadelphia Green and the New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) formed a partnership to develop a vacant land management program for the New Kensington neighborhood. The program, managed by NKCDC, is designed to reduce the negative impact of vacant land on neighborhood stability and redevelopment efforts. With support from the Philadelphia Office of Housing and Community Development, the partnership has yielded impressive results. About 50% of the neighborhood's vacant lots - over 660 sites - have been cleaned and planted with grass and trees or transformed into community open spaces, side yards and gardens.

This 15-minute video documents this story of struggle, collaboration, and transformation through interviews with community residents, staff of both organizations and other supporters. Produced by Value Added Television with assistance from Comcast Cable.
