Visit
Gardens around the Country...and around the World
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) offers
an exciting array of extended tours in the United States and abroad.
These tours visit beautiful private and public gardens,
flower shows, arboretums, specialty nurseries, and more!
Each year
PHS members and guests can choose from two trips abroad, and at
least
one US trip, all accompanied
by expert guides and experienced
tour leaders.
PHS trips provide access to private gardens, and
introduce you to extraordinary gardeners and garden
owners.
Gardens in Charleston (with Visits to Savannah and Kiawah)
April 14 – 19, 2009
A spring visit to Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, is a horticultural delight, with azaleas in bloom, wisteria framing doorways, and carefully tended beds in walled gardens. Both cities have long charmed visitors with their interesting architecture, fascinating history, beautiful gardens, and gracious way of life. We’ll visit choice private gardens and experience southern hospitality first-hand.
In addition to private gardens, we will also visit Drayton Hall in Charleston, an outstanding example of Georgian Palladian style, as well as beautiful Middleton Place, site of the oldest landscaped gardens in America. Also on the itinerary is a visit to Kiawah Island, a barrier island near Charleston. Overnight accommodations are in the Meeting Street Inn in Charleston.
Betsy Gullan, PHS education manager for member activities, and Jean Lenehan of JL Tours will lead this six-day tour. Click here for a printed itinerary. If you have questions, click here or call 215-988-8778.

We’ll see gardens on large estates as well as small gardens beautifully designed to create a feeling of space or to take advantage of a view. Included in the itinerary is Wave Hill, a beautiful public garden in the northern Bronx, with lovely views of the palisades along the Hudson River, and Storm King Art Center, a large outdoor sculpture garden.
Hotel accommodations for three nights will be at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown, just across the Tappan Zee Bridge. A chartered motorcoach will be with us throughout the trip
