PHS Releases ‘City Parks’ Handbook
 |
The PHS City Parks Handbook is a guidebook for the next generation.
Based on the work of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Philadelphia Green program, the nation’s most comprehensive urban greening program, The PHS City Parks Handbook is a comprehensive look at how groups can transform local parks into vibrant community assets to enjoy now and years to come.
The PHS City Parks Handbook is the perfect guide to learn how to form a park group, create a master plan, organize cleanups, work with local officials and neighbors, obtain grants, and plan fundraisers. The guide offers profiles of successful park projects in Philadelphia. An accompanying DVD contains inspiring testimonials on how to get started on reclaiming urban parks.
“Parks provide significant aesthetic, economic, environmental and social benefits,” said Joan Reilly, senior director of Philadelphia Green and leader of the Philadelphia Green’s Parks Revitalization Program, which works year-round to improve 100 urban parks across Philadelphia. “This manual can serve as a model for communities across the country.”
Studies show that well-kept parks and public green spaces boost urban economies and increase nearby property values by up to 30 percent.
A program of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Philadelphia Green is the nation’s most comprehensive urban greening program. Since 1974, Philadelphia Green has supported the development and ongoing care of community gardens, neighborhood parks and high-profile public green spaces in Philadelphia. Working in partnership with neighborhood residents, community organizations and city agencies, the program uses greening as a community building tool. It educates and empowers people to make the city a more attractive and livable place through horticulture.
Proceeds from the annual Philadelphia Flower Show—along with support from foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals—help support Philadelphia Green.
